Baby Steps in Music is a music class setting for children ages infant-4 years and their parents taught by local music teacher Anna Hanks. The classes focus on the use of traditional American folk music, along with classical and folk music from world cultures, to develop a sense of steady beat and tunefulness in your child. Through bounces, finger play, clapping, moving and more, you and your child will explore songs and rhymes that American families have shared for generations.
There is a cirtical need for more preschool (3-4 years old) sign-ups in order for that class to run. If you are interested in any class, but especially the 3-4 age bracket, please sign up soon!
The curriculum will be based on the “First Steps in Music” program written by music professor Dr. John Feierabend. Dr. Feierabend has developed this curriculum through his research of folk and traditional music and rhymes. The music you will be learning is melodically expressive and will appeal to your child’s sense of wonder. The goals for the class are to prepare your children for the later development of accurate rhythm skills, accurate singing skills and sensitivity to the expressive qualities in music.

According to John Feierabend, the goal of the First Steps in Music classes is to enable all children to reach their full potential through involvement in informal music and movement activities. From free play with percussion instruments to organized songs, rhymes and games, these sessions:
-Inspire children to listen, feel and move to music
-Are incredibly fun for kids and parents
-Encourage constructive social interactions with other children and their families
-Stimulate a child's imagination through songs and movement

During each class we will sing and move and play to various songs where you will bounce your baby to the beat, learn finger play games, tap and clap with your baby, move to a steady beat, and sing lullabies. Each class will be comprised of some new material and some review material, to allow the babies to revisit games and songs with which they are already familiar. Each week I will provide lyric sheets for the new music that is introduced so you can practice at home.
Have your say
