Tricks to Play on this Silliest of All Holidays

By Melissa Hucal, Heather Wirtz, and Brigett Lummel, March 27, 2015
April 1st is a great time to inject a little fun and spice things up! Here are a few ideas for some harmless tricks that you can play on you kids or with your kids.

Funny faces: After your kids go to sleep, attach paper eyes and other facial features to the household appliances. In the morning, the toaster, refrigerator and television will be smiling back at them!

Gummy worms and fish: What could be sillier than finding a "worm" in your apple or sandwich? Maybe some fish floating in your glass of juice (aka jello)?

Colored milk
: Add a few drops of food coloring to a glass (or the whole gallon!) of milk. Imagine your child's surprise when you tell him/her about the blue or green cow that produced this drink!

Clothes that don't fit: Pull that box of 'too small' clothes out of the closet or donation pile and place them in your child's drawer. When they get dressed in the morning, they'll be amazed at how much they have grown overnight!

Time to Wake Up
: Change the clocks forward a few hours. Wake up your kids in a mad frenzy and tell them they are late for school!

Breakfast Bait & Switch: My favorite attack on the hubby - switch the sugar bowl with salt. Hopefully he has a sense of humor!

At the Office: How about labeling everything on your co-worker's desk (phone, coffee mug, pen, computer screen, books, etc.) with a post-it note? One time I wrapped a co-workers chair in tape (mummy-style) - he didn't think it was funny, but I did!

Rig the Computer: Back in the day, I would crack myself up by taking the rollerball out of the bottom of the mouse so it wouldn't work. Nowadays, if you still have a rollerball in your mouse - the joke is really on you!  Instead, you can cover the optical lens with a piece of masking tape - same effect when your kid can't get the cursor to move. A groan of frustration is a sure sign your prank worked!

Strike it Rich: Super glue some quarters to the sidewalk. Watch from a far as passersby try and pry them off with their fingers.

Clean-up: Get the kids to clean up after dinner. First, tie a rubber band around the sink sprayer and be prepared for a wet mess!

Bedtime: After the kiddos are in bed, gently pick them up from their slumber and put them in a different bed. When they wake up in the wrong bed the next morning, sound surprised!

"Dinner": Sundaes (out of mashed potatoes) for dinner and grilled cheese (out of pound cake) with fries (out of sugar cookie dough) for dessert?! The perfect April Fool's Day trick, your kiddos won't believe their eyes or their taste buds! Find the directions HERE.

If April Fools' Day isn't a "real" holiday, how did it start? No one really knows. No fooling!
There are many different theories on the origin of April Fools' Day, but one of the most popular involves the calendar. The year was 1582, the same year that France began using the Gregorian Calendar. The change in calendar shifted the observance of New Year's Day from the end of March (around the time when Spring begins) to the first of January.
The story is that there were many people who either didn't know about the change - or perhaps didn't care - and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1st. Those who knew of the calendar changes began to tease and trick those who celebrated, calling them "April Fools." This practice of pranks continued year after year and eventually spread throughout Europe.
Whether this story is completely true or not is still up for discussion.
