Pia the Peacekeeper, a majestic Northwest Troll, was awakened on Aug. 19 and dozens have already found her and paid a visit. Pia, Bainbridge Island’s 18-foot troll built from recycled wood, keeps watch between trees in a tranquil park about a mile from the ferry.
We are lucky in Kitsap County to have the work of Thomas Dambo, the talented and leading recycle artist, here on Bainbridge Island! This project is the latest in Dambo’s global Troll installations that now exceed 100 sites across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the US. Pia joins six other Thomas Dambo trolls in the NW Way of the Bird King installation, which can be found in West Seattle, Vashon Island, Issaquah, Ballard, and Portland.
SCAN Design Foundation, the presenting partner, along with Bainbridge Metro Parks and Rec District, the site partner, are pleased to welcome Pia.
Pia’s Poem by Thomas Dambo: Pretty pretty please, let’s keep the peace beneath the trees. Hold you in my hand I will remind you with a squeeze. Quiet little people cause your criers make me tired. Pia likes to play with people, people they keep quiet.
How to visit Pia - How to Get There:
There are many ways to visit Pia. Walking, biking and public transportation are all in keeping with Pia’s value of environmental sustainability.
Pia lives approximately one mile from the ferry.
- If you travel on foot, it’s a little over a mile walk from the ferry terminal. Take the Sound to Olympics trail, which runs alongside Highway 305 and is easily accessed from the terminal and downtown. If you take the walk, try the John Nelson Trail - a verdant short loop tail that hugs a vibrant ravine. Cross 305 at High School Road, and look for the nearest trail. You can also access the Park via Madison Avenue, just about .5 mile from downtown Winslow.
- If you take a bus, disembark at 305 and High School Road, or the stop near the library. (Note: there is no public transportation on Sundays.)
- If you drive, know here is extremely limited parking on site.
How to visit Pia - Tips and Clues
(Finding the troll in the wild is part of the fun!):
BONUS CLUES:
- Is that a bell I hear? Maybe not today, but our Troll will hear them through the trees on Sundays and weekdays from September beyond May.
- Emerson said, "do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path...."
- In a clearing through the trees sits a playful troll who is keeping the peace. Close to an entrance, which one could it be? It's nearer a roundabout than the Salish Sea.
